My Review

If you are looking for an easy-to-read self-help manual for dealing with depression, then look no further.  The No BullShit Guide to Depression is the book you want.

Author Stephen Koczen deals with depression in his own life.  In the book, he talks about his own journey, his stubborness to deal with depression, and the general lack of resources out there for people dealing with depression.

The book explains depression itself.  Typical days of depression.  How it affects your life.

He then has you make a solemn pledge to yourself to take care of your depression.

The book then goes into many tools for dealing with depression.  These tools include topics on using your mind, taking action, taking care of your body, your environment and more.

After this rather comprehensive toolbox, he book goes into how to deal with people.  Specifically how to support people with depression, how to use your support people, how to deal with non-supportive people, etc.

Last but certainly not least, he has a section dedicated to the living with depression in the long term.

I really like this book.  Here's why:

  • easy to read
  • useful easy-to-integrate tools
  • written by someone who actually has depression
  • written by someone who advocates taking responsibility for your depression so you can actually do something about it
  • there is a chapter dedicated on how you can be a good support person to a friend who has depression!

Author Steven Skoczen validates several of my key values towards depression.  I am a firm believer that if you suffer from depression, you have to accept responsibility for it.  I also believe that you have to take constructive daily actions to combat depression.

He takes these values one step further and provides you with a toolbox of recipes for dealing with depression on a daily basis.

If you, or someone you care about, suffers from depression, then you need to read this book!
